August 4, 2020 | Australian Water Brokers Association
The Australian Water Brokers Association (AWBA) has released a detailed response to the ACCC’s Murray–Darling Basin Water Markets Inquiry Interim Report, acknowledging the report as an important step toward improving transparency and confidence in Australia’s water markets.
In its media release, the AWBA notes that members have invested significant time contributing to the inquiry and were pleased to see many of the Association’s recommendations reflected in the ACCC’s interim findings. The AWBA welcomed progress toward a more consistent regulatory framework, while also stressing the importance of ensuring that any new regulatory measures remain proportionate to the benefits they seek to achieve.
The Association highlighted positive developments already underway within state-based systems—including enhanced reporting of trade reasons and improvements to interoperability across state registers—while also expressing concerns about how some allegations referenced in the report have been presented without supporting evidence.
The AWBA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high professional standards through voluntary compliance, peer-reviewed membership, and continued engagement with regulators and stakeholders.
