Cyber Security Reminder for Water Market Participants
Recent incidents within the water industry have highlighted the ongoing importance of cyber security awareness for all market participants.

AWBA understands that a water broker has recently experienced a phishing email scam, while an irrigation infrastructure operator (IIO) has reported an accidental disclosure of personal information. While the IIO has advised that its preliminary investigation has concluded and no personal information was accessed or altered by external parties, these events serve as a timely reminder that cyber risks remain present across the sector.
As water trading increasingly relies on digital communication and online systems, market participants are encouraged to remain vigilant—particularly when receiving unexpected messages, requests for urgent action, or changes to bank account details.
AWBA recommends that water market participants:
- Pause and verify any unexpected or unusual emails relating to water trades, settlements, or account details;
- Contact your water broker directly using known phone numbers or contact details if anything appears inconsistent or unfamiliar;
- Be cautious of emails requesting urgent payments, bank detail changes, or login credentials; and
- Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious sources.
Water brokers play a critical role in verifying transactions and protecting client interests. If you are ever unsure about the legitimacy of a communication, speaking directly with your broker is the safest course of action.
Cyber threats continue to evolve, and even well-established organisations can be affected. Staying alert and maintaining open communication with trusted intermediaries is essential to protecting personal information and ensuring confidence in water market transactions.
AWBA encourages all participants to treat cyber security as a shared responsibility and to report any suspected incidents promptly so risks can be managed effectively across the industry.
